Credit Card FAQs
Below are the most commonly asked credit card questions. If you do not find adequate help here, please call 800.637.0852.
Who is responsible for your credit card debt after you die? What happens when someone dies that has credit card debt? First, the card company will try to collect from the estate. If that doesn't work, they ask the joint account holder (if there is a joint account holder) to pay the remaining balance.
Can you get a credit card without a Social Security number? In the U.S., financial institutions often require a Social Security Number as this is the only way to reference previous credit history. Some institutions may have other criteria for granting a secured or unsecured credit card.
Should you close credit card accounts that you are not using? To help avoid fraud, most consumer advocacy groups suggest you close unused accounts. Most card issuers won't penalize for closing an account and will allow you to reopen at a later date if necessary.
